This four-week unit guides students through a critical literacy approach to Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird and Richard Wright's Native Son. Assigned activities will help students analyze narrative voice, character perspective, racial representation, and censorship while developing critical thinking skills to question power dynamics and social hierarchies in literature.

Unit Goals
Students will analyze how narrative perspectives shapes the understanding of racial justice
Students will compare representations of Black characters in both novels
Students will examine the historical context of both texts and their reception
Students will evaluate arguments for and against censorship in educational settings
Students will create counter-narratives that amplify marginalized voices
Grow their minds, further their knowledge
Native Son and To Kill a Mockingbird are novels that address segregation equally against one another. This four-week unit is a great way to boost knowledge and strong connections between class peers, while also enhancing critical thinking, communication skills, and exemplifying creative minds in a modern, divided society such as the society we endure today!
